能是：促进奥林匹克项目在中国广泛开展；组织中国奥委会代表团，参加国际奥委会主办的夏季、冬季奥运会，并提供必要的经费和运动器材；协助其它全国性体育组织举办体育竞赛和运动会。
中国体育组织早在1910年10月成立，1922年即为国际奥委会所承认。新中国成立后，1954年5月在雅典举行的国际奥委会第49届会议上通过决议被继续承认。但在1956年第16届奥运会时，由于国际奥委会某些负责人制造“两个中国”，允许台湾当局也派队参加奥运会，对此中华全国体育总会提出抗议，中国奥委会于1958年8月宣布与国际奥委会断绝关系，1979年11月26日，经国际奥委会全体委员表决，又恢复了中国奥委会在国际奥委会中的合法地位。设在台北的奥委会作为中国的一个地方机构，用“中国台北奥林匹克委员会”的名称留在国际奥委会内。
